Tender Sculpture-Hamburg  (RevisionDate 11.DEC.08)

The Kunstkompanie HafenCity e.V. invites sculptors from across the world to participate in the exhibition of sculptures taking place in summer of 2009 in Hamburg’s HafenCity. Around 15 large sculptures will be positioned on the open spaces considering the local environment, on the terraces, the promenades and the open spaces between the buildings. It is conceivable to install floating sculptures if certificate of floatability is presented.

Exhibition site:
The HafenCity in Hamburg is the biggest urbanistic building site in Europe. It is located in the area of the former free-harbour north of the Elbe River. The HafenCity is adjacent to the northern historic Speicherstadt and the western gangways. The area is in an air-line distance of about 800 m from the city centre.

Theme:
The theme of the exhibition is „Change“, a reference to a maritime ambiance is desirable but not required.

Date:
3 month exhibition period in the summer of 2009, starting 21. June 2009.

Selection process: For the selection of the artists the Kunstkompanie HafenCity e.V. will appoint a jury of experts which will consist of independent and internationally accepted experts.

So far the following people are designated to be in the jury:

  • Dr. Jürgen Fitschen, Director of the Gerhard-Marcks-Haus in Bremen, Germany
  • Bernd Stieghorst, Curator and Editor-in-Chief of sculpture network, Switzerland
  • Axel Richter, Evangelische Akademie Hamburg

The chairman of the Kunstkompanie HafenCity e.V. participates in the meetings with an advisory function.

The selection of the artists will be carried out in a differentiated and multistaged process:

The artists will be invited upon the jury’s suggestion to create a specific sculpture for a defined place. That shall integrate international highly reputed artists directly into the project and therefore guarantee an attractive level of the project.

The artists interested to participate send their CV to the Kunstkompanie HafenCity e.V., attaching their portfolio. Deadline for the transmittal is the 28. February 2009.

Depending on the decision of the still pending public application procedure, the jury will then decide upon the selected sites and artists, the specifications of the site owners have to be taken into consideration at the same time. In cooperation between artists and jury a site-specific concept for the use of the location as sculptural exhibitionsite will be developed.

At this time the general regulations will be published.

This tender captures the actual conditions. Changes can be made at any time, they do not have to be communicated to the artists. The respective conditions published at this point take effect.
